DaysofPal- A relentless heatwave is gripping the Gaza Strip, turning makeshift shelters into sweltering ovens and pushing thousands of displaced Palestinians to the brink of survival.
With no electricity, scarce water, and little food, families who have already endured nearly two years of Israeli bombardment, mass displacement, and starvation now face a new life-threatening crisis.
Tents across Gaza’s displacement camps, made from thin plastic sheets or tarpaulin, trap the sun’s heat, creating suffocating conditions.
“These shelters trap the hot air, turning homes into ovens. Inside, families struggle to breathe, stay hydrated and survive,” said Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, reporting from central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah.
For many, stepping inside the tents during the day is unbearable.
“It’s too hot inside the tent, so I prefer to stay outside,” said Sharifa Abu Armaneh, a displaced Palestinian, adding, “Our situation is very difficult. We can’t tolerate this war and this hot weather anymore.”
Across the camps, long queues stretch for blocks as residents wait hours for a few liters of water.
“Water is in short supply. Many wait hours… some families are forced to choose between drinking, cooking, and washing,” Khoudary explained, as the available water is often warm or contaminated, raising fears of waterborne diseases.
No Power, No Relief
With Gaza’s power grid almost entirely collapsed, residents have no fans, air conditioning, or refrigeration. Nights bring little relief as tents remain hot and humid, forcing families to sleep outside under the constant irritation of mosquitoes and insect bites.
Any scarce food that reaches the camps quickly spoils without refrigeration.
Hunger and Malnutrition
The siege and the severe restriction of aid have left food supplies critically low, whereas many families rely on a single meager meal a day, often just bread and tea.
Malnutrition is visibly affecting children, weakening their immune systems and leaving them vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
A Deadly Combination
This extreme heat, compounded by water shortages, the absence of electricity, and hunger, has created what aid workers describe as a “slow death trap” in Gaza’s displacement camps.
The United Nations has warned that the combination of high temperatures and resource scarcity could lead to a sharp rise in preventable deaths if urgent humanitarian access is not granted.
For the displaced of Gaza, survival now means not just escaping bombs, but enduring a summer that is proving just as deadly.
