Days of Palestine – Washington
Congressman Joaquin Castro and Gus Bilirakis led Sunday, April 29, 2022, a bipartisan letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressing deep concern about a disturbing rise in recent extremist attacks against Jerusalem’s Christian community.
In the letter, the representatives urge Secretary Blinken to work with his Israeli counterparts to ensure Jerusalem is a place where Christians, Muslims, and Jews can worship safely and freely.
In recent months, the leaders of Christian churches in Jerusalem, including the Greek Orthodox Church, Catholic Church, and others have spoken publicly about the mounting challenges faced by Christian communities in Jerusalem.
While the Israeli occupation has committed to protecting the rights of all religious minorities in Jerusalem, the actions of settlers extremist groups are threatening the safety and long-term viability of Christian worship and presence in the city.
The letter follows a public statement by the Patriarchs and Heads of Local Churches of Jerusalem, in which the faith leaders wrote that “radical groups” are engaging “in a systematic attempt to drive the Christian community out of Jerusalem and other parts of the Holy Land.”
The full letter can be found here.
Israeli occupation forces suppress Palestinian worshippers in the Aqsa mosque, using excessive force against defenseless worshipers including women, children, and the elderly.
Over the past weeks, hundreds of Palestinians were injured and detained by Israeli occupation forces who seek to get the mosque clear of Palestinian worshippers to allow Israeli settlers to storm the Mosque and perform Talmudic Rituals in the Islamic sacred places in the occupied city of Jerusalem.
