The extensive destruction of housing in Gaza by the Israeli occupation may be classified as war crimes, according to a United Nations expert. Balakrishnan Rajagopal, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, highlighted these concerns in a recent interview with Al Jazeera.
“The crime of domicide is one which involves the systematic or widespread destruction of housing,” Rajagopal explained. He emphasized that such actions, when not justified by military necessity, are already considered war crimes under the Geneva Convention.
Recent data from Gaza, as of July 21, reveals that approximately 60 percent of residential buildings have sustained damage. This widespread destruction raises significant concerns about the proportionality and necessity of these military actions, and their impact on the civilian population.
The situation in Gaza continues to draw international attention and scrutiny, with calls for accountability and adherence to international humanitarian law.
