Urgent Call for International Intervention to Block Proposed Palestinian Prisoner Execution Law

DaysofPal-  Palestinian prisoner advocacy organizations issued an urgent appeal on Wednesday, calling on free people around the world to act immediately to stop a proposed Israeli law that would allow the execution of Palestinian detainees. The groups warned that the bill could soon be approved by the Knesset.

In a joint statement, the organizations said Israeli occupation forces are moving forward with efforts to pass the legislation, taking advantage of global attention being focused elsewhere. They considered this to be part of “targeting the Palestinian presence through the crime of genocide and systematic erasure.”

The bill was approved in its final reading by the Knesset’s national security committee late on Tuesday night, according to the statement, opening the door for a vote in the entire assembly the following week.

The groups renewed their call for urgent international intervention to halt the measure before it is formally adopted. They said they had already contacted international human rights bodies, including the United Nations, along with diplomatic missions, to highlight these dangerous developments.

They also raised concerns about conditions inside Israeli prisons, alleging systematic abuse and policies that have led to a rising number of deaths among detainees. The organizations said more than 100 prisoners have died since the start of the current period of escalation, with dozens of cases still undisclosed.

The statement noted that the proposal to execute detainees is not new, tracing its origins to legal frameworks dating back to the British Mandate era. However, its implementation has historically been limited and tied to political considerations.

Calls to pass the law have intensified under the current Israeli government, led by Itamar Ben-Gvir, with backing from right-wing parties and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The issue has become a central element of the government’s agenda.

The organizations called for the application of universal jurisdiction to hold accountable those responsible for alleged violations, including torture and war crimes. They also urged the suspension of diplomatic, military, and economic cooperation with Israel until it complies with international law.

In addition, they called for the immediate and unconditional release of all Palestinian political detainees, an end to administrative detention practices, and the dismantling of the military court system. They demanded independent investigations into allegations of abuse and deaths in custody, cooperation with the International Criminal Court, and the implementation of arrest warrants.

The groups also called for unrestricted access for the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit detainees, stressing the need for greater international oversight of prison conditions.
