DaysofPal — Heavy rainfall has flooded hundreds of tents and makeshift shelters across the Gaza Strip, compounding the suffering of displaced Palestinians already facing dire humanitarian conditions after two years of war.
Water seeped into tents and temporary shelters made of cloth and plastic, many of which lack even the most basic protection against harsh weather.
Displaced families spent the night trying to drain the water and save what little belongings they have left, including blankets and clothing.
Hosni Mhanna, spokesperson for Gaza’s municipality, said the tents are “not equipped to withstand severe weather conditions,” adding that the crisis has disproportionately affected children and the elderly.
He explained that the wave of heavy rain has once again exposed the extent of damage to Gaza’s infrastructure, particularly drainage and sewage systems.
Flooded streets and overwhelmed drainage networks have caused water to accumulate in displacement areas and shelters.
Municipal crews, Mhanna said, are continuing efforts to pump out water and clear drainage systems despite limited resources.
However, widespread destruction of infrastructure is hindering a full response. He also warned of potential health and environmental risks if the rains continue.
The crisis comes as hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza remain without permanent housing after entire neighborhoods were destroyed during the war. Many families continue to rely on fragile temporary shelters amid worsening humanitarian and health conditions.
According to estimates, around 1.9 million displaced people, out of Gaza’s population of approximately 2.4 million, are living in severely inadequate conditions.
Despite a ceasefire that came into effect on October 10, 2025, living conditions have seen little improvement, with limited entry of food, medical aid, and shelter materials due to Israeli suffocating siege imposed on the Gaza strip.
Humanitarian organizations warn that without urgent intervention, the combination of displacement, damaged infrastructure, and severe weather could further deepen the crisis for Gaza’s already vulnerable population.
