UNICEF: Gaza Faces Catastrophic Hunger as Bombs Outpace Food

UNICEF Warns Israel-U.S. Aid Distribution Plan Will Deepen Suffering in Gaza

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached devastating new heights, with bombs and missiles flooding the besieged enclave at a rate far exceeding that of life-saving food and medical aid, UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said during a field visit to Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Elder described the situation as “bleak, horrific, and hopeless,” highlighting the daily struggles of Palestinian families, many of whom are unable to secure even a single meal for their children.

“There was a momentary uptick in aid and slight improvements in water and food supplies,” he noted. “But that optimism has quickly dissolved in the face of a catastrophic blockade on humanitarian relief.”

Gaza’s residents, Elder said, are enduring a nightmarish routine of airstrikes and displacement. “Every known limit of human endurance has been shattered,” he stated. “Mothers go without food for days just to provide a single meal for their children.”

Many families have been living in tents for over six months, surviving under constant tank fire, only to be forced to flee yet again. “Gaza has faced this devastating reality for more than 600 days,” Elder said.

For the second consecutive year, Eid passed in silence and mourning. “Instead of joy, families gather in silence to remember those they’ve lost, surrounded by an overwhelming sense of grief and abandonment,” he said. “There are no homes, no shelters—just loss. People spent their lives building homes and gardens, and now everything has disappeared.”

Malnutrition is claiming young lives at an alarming rate, though the exact toll remains difficult to determine. “Severe malnutrition makes a child 10 times more likely to die from something minor,” Elder warned. “This is the deadly cycle: hunger, dirty water, and lack of basic healthcare.”

Hospitals, once a refuge, are now out of reach for many. Of Gaza’s 38 pre-war hospitals, only 19 are still partially functioning—and just eight of those are public. Medical supplies are scarce, and the limited network is overwhelmed. Even reaching a hospital can mean risking one’s life.

Elder estimated that only 10% of the necessary humanitarian aid is currently making it into Gaza. “More bombs and missiles are entering Gaza than food,” he stressed.

He also voiced serious concerns about the recently established Gaza Humanitarian Assistance Fund, managed with U.S. and Israeli backing. The new aid distribution system in southern Gaza, Elder said, is “militarized” and dangerously flawed. “Children are being killed simply trying to collect a can of food,” he said.

“This system,” he warned, “is deliberately designed to force people from northern Gaza to the south, and it threatens to dismantle the more effective distribution network we built during the ceasefire, which included 400 humanitarian aid points across the region.”

As conditions worsen and humanitarian access remains critically restricted, Elder’s message was clear: Gaza is on the brink, and the world must act before more lives are lost to starvation and neglect.
