DaysofPal – The Palestinian Center for Prisoners’ Defense has raised alarm over the condition of several Palestinian detainees from Gaza, reportedly injured by shrapnel from Israeli interceptor missiles.
The incident occurred on Sunday near Megiddo Prison, where Israeli missiles were launched to intercept Iranian rockets.
“According to sources, the shrapnel penetrated parts of the prison buildings, causing direct injuries to several prisoners, some of whom were already ill, under harsh and inhumane detention conditions,” the center said in a statement.
Despite the injuries, the center said that Israeli authorities have refused to transfer the wounded to hospitals or provide them with medical care.
It condemned the denial of treatment as “a blatant violation of the most basic prisoner rights guaranteed by the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law.”
The organization called for the immediate disclosure of the identities and medical conditions of the injured detainees. It also demanded that Red Cross representatives and international human rights organizations be granted urgent access to Megiddo Prison to assess the prisoners’ situation.
Describing the incident as a “compound crime,” the center accused Israeli authorities of both deliberate medical neglect and endangering prisoners’ lives during the military escalation. It urged the launch of an international investigation into the matter.
The statement concluded by holding Israeli authorities “fully responsible for the safety of the prisoners,” warning of “ongoing serious violations” amid intensified regional tensions.
Currently, over 10,000 Palestinian prisoners are held in Israeli detention facilities, including thousands from Gaza, many of whom are said to be enduring the most severe conditions in decades.
Since June 13, Israel has been launching attacks on Iran, targeting nuclear facilities, missile bases, military leaders, and nuclear scientists. Tehran responded by firing ballistic missiles and drones deep into Israeli territory, in the biggest direct confrontation between the two sides.
