Days of Palestine – Washington, D.C.
About four thousand Americans demanded their country’s president, Joe Biden, to intervene to release 74 Palestinian university students arrested by the Israeli occupation forces during the past two months for their expression of political stances rejecting the Israeli occupation.
Activists, in solidarity with the Palestinian right, through a petition launched on Sunday, demanded the U.S. President and members of Congress to exercise their influence to protect Palestinian students from the oppressive occupation measures against them and to release the students.
The petition referred to the imprisoned student, Lian Nasser, 21, a fourth-year student who is on the verge of graduating from Birzeit University.
The petition said that during Lian’s arrest, she was tied, blindfolded, and interrogated in Ofer Military Prison without the presence of a lawyer or legal advisor. Her family was unable to visit her. She is now awaiting trial in Damon Military Prison along with seven other female students out of a total of 74 students from Birzeit University who have been arrested, and many are still being arrested.
Some of them are in Israeli prisons for their non-violent opposition to Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians.
It pointed out that in October 2020, the occupation authorities classified student cadres at Birzeit University as criminal organizations as part of attempts to suppress student activity and silence Palestinian demands for freedom.
The petition addressed to President Biden reminded that freedom of expression and peaceful association are part of fundamental and universal human rights.
