More than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails launched on Monday open-ended hunger strike, protesting Israeli detention policies.
The launch of the hunger strike, led by Palestinian MP Marwan al-Barghouti, marked the Palestinian Prisoners Day.
Prisoners called their strike ‘Freedom and Dignity” and called for the resumption of family visits, better medical care and better treatment of female prisoners.
“I have been both a witness to and a victim of the Israeli illegal system of mass arbitrary arrests and ill-treatment of Palestinian prisoners,” Al-Barghouti told the New York Times.
He added: “After exhausting all other options, I decided there was no choice but to resist these abuses by going on a hunger strike.”
Barghouti has spent 15 years in prison since being arrested by the Israeli occupation forces in 2002, during the Second Intifada.
It is worth mentioning that the Palestinian Authority and Fatah overtly called for the Palestinians to support the hunger strike, but covertly they asked Al-Barghouti to cancel it.
There are over 7,000 Palestinian prisoners inside the Israeli jails, including 462 boys, 48 women and 14 girls. In addition, this number includes 523 sick prisoners and more than 500 under administrative detention.
Reported numbers vary from one rights group to another due to the different methodologies of collecting the numbers.

There is not exact number because the Israeli prison services have not issued data about the prisoners for about more than five months.
