DayofPal– More than 30 people miraculously survived the collapse of a three-story building in northern Gaza on Monday, as the aftermath of relentless Israeli attacks continues to endanger lives.
The structure, already weakened by months of bombardment, gave way under its own fragility, another grave testament to the widespread destruction gripping the besieged enclave.
With nowhere else to go, the families had sought refuge in the damaged home, despite the looming danger. “We have lost everything,” said Abu Shadi, a resident of the collapsed building. “And now, we have no shelter at all.”
Gaza’s Civil Defense spokesperson, Mahmoud Bassal, warned that this tragedy is far from an isolated incident. “Hundreds of homes across the Gaza Strip are on the verge of collapse due to the relentless bombings and fires during the war,” he said.
“Thousands of families are living in constant fear, trapped in structures that could crumble at any moment.”
Despite a ceasefire taking effect on January 19, Israel has continued to tighten restrictions on humanitarian aid. When the first phase of the ceasefire ended on March 1, it imposed a near-total blockade, cutting off essential supplies to Gaza’s devastated population.
The dire conditions are compounded by the lack of heavy machinery needed to clear the rubble and retrieve bodies. Only nine machines have been permitted entry, far from the 500 needed to tackle the overwhelming scale of destruction.
As the dust settles over Jabalia, the survivors of Monday’s collapse face yet another painful reality. Even in supposed safety, nowhere in Gaza is truly secure.
