The Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs issued an urgent warning on Monday about the outbreak of a dangerous virus among prisoners held in Section 3 of Israel’s Megiddo Prison.
According to the commission’s statement, which was received by Days of Palestine , nearly 90% of the detainees in the affected section have been suffering from severe diarrhea and vomiting for the past ten days.
Some prisoners, particularly the elderly, have lost consciousness due to the severity of the illness. Despite the worsening condition, Israeli prison authorities have reportedly refused to provide medical care, leaving inmates untreated.
The outbreak is believed to be a direct consequence of the harsh conditions imposed by Israeli prison authorities since the start of the war on Gaza.
The commission noted that systematic medical neglect, along with severe shortages of cleaning supplies and fresh clothing, has led to a surge in illnesses inside Israeli detention centers.
One of the most rampant infections among prisoners in recent months has been scabies, a highly contagious skin disease.
Rights groups have repeatedly accused Israeli occupation authorities of deliberately worsening detention conditions for Palestinian prisoners, with restrictions on healthcare, food, and hygiene supplies.
The latest outbreak in Megiddo Prison raises serious concerns about the health and safety of detainees, particularly as medical negligence continues to put their lives at risk.
