MSF: Malnutrition in Gaza Reaches Catastrophic Levels
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

DaysofPal- Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has warned that the malnutrition crisis in the Gaza Strip has reached unprecedented and catastrophic levels due to the tight Israeli blockade, as it is now in its 130th consecutive day, calling for the immediate and unrestricted entry of food and medical supplies.

In a statement on Sunday, MSF reported that its medical teams in clinics in Al-Mawasi in southern Gaza and Gaza City have recorded the highest rates of acute malnutrition since the beginning of the Israeli genocide.

It added that over 700 pregnant or breastfeeding women and more than 500 children suffering from moderate to severe malnutrition have been registered in its therapeutic feeding centers.

Furthermore, MSF noted that the number of patients treated at the Gaza City clinic has quadrupled in less than two months, increasing from 293 in May to 983 in July, including 326 children aged between 6 and 23 months.

“This is the first time we are seeing malnutrition on such a dangerous scale,” said Mohammed Abu Mughaisib, MSF’s Deputy Medical Coordinator in Gaza.

“This starvation is not accidental; it is deliberate. And it could end tomorrow if Israeli occupation allowed large-scale food entry.” He added.

In addition, MSF emphasized that the food crisis in Gaza is the result of calculated choices by the Israeli occupation, including minimizing food entry, destroying agricultural infrastructure and local food production, and militarizing aid distribution.

The MSF also warned of the ongoing collapse of the healthcare system due to water contamination by sewage, shortages of fuel for water desalination plants, and the harsh living conditions in displacement camps, all of which pose serious public health threats.

Meanwhile, the Government Media Office (GMO) in Gaza reiterated its warnings over the escalating famine threat, stating that approximately 1.25 million people are facing catastrophic hunger, and 96% of the population suffers from food insecurity, a humanitarian disaster of unprecedented scale.

GMO held the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the current humanitarian catastrophe and strongly condemned the complicity of countries such as the United States, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.

Additionally, GMO urged the international community, as well as Arab and Islamic nations, to act immediately to break the blockade, allow the entry of humanitarian aid, and rescue civilians from death by starvation.
