The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor reported on Sunday that Israeli forces have targeted 16 schools used as shelters in Gaza over the past month, describing this as an exacerbation of the ongoing genocide.
The organization highlighted a systematic escalation in the targeting of schools, which have been converted into shelters for displaced civilians. The strikes, carried out without prior warning, have resulted in numerous deaths and injuries among the displaced.
Late Saturday night, Israeli forces targeted the “Halimah Al-Sa’diyyah” school in Jabalia, northern Gaza, killing four displaced individuals and injuring others. Earlier on Saturday, Israeli airstrikes hit the “Amr ibn Al-As” school in northern Gaza City, resulting in the deaths of four displaced persons, including a child, and causing additional injuries.
Since the beginning of August, Israeli forces have bombed 16 schools being used as shelters in Gaza, 15 of which are in northern Gaza Valley. These attacks have killed 217 Palestinians and injured hundreds more, according to the report.
The Euro-Mediterranean Monitor noted an increase in attacks on civilians in the last week, particularly in Gaza and northern Gaza, targeting residential buildings, commercial areas, and shelter centers.
The organization condemned the targeting and destruction of schools housing displaced persons as unjustifiable and a severe breach of principles of distinction, military necessity, proportionality, and precaution.
It characterized these attacks as part of a broader campaign of genocide in Gaza, aimed at displacing as many Palestinians as possible through killing and forced eviction.
The report also criticized the complicity of the U.S. and several European countries, suggesting that international silence and inaction in halting the genocide encourage Israel to continue its plans of extermination.
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor called for accountability and legal action against nations complicit with Israel in these crimes, including those providing support or engaging in contractual relationships that contribute to the continuation of these violations.
