Three Israeli security personnel were killed in a shooting operation at the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby Bridge) crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank.
The man behind the operation was identified as Maher Al-Jazi, a driver holding a Jordanian nationality and hailing from the famous Al-Ja’zi, family of the leader of the Battle of Karama, who refused to cease fire before the complete defeat of the Israeli army.
The Jordanian driver responsible for the operation was shot and killed by Israeli forces at the scene. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. when the truck driver arrived at the crossing and opened fire on Israeli personnel stationed at the bridge.
Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the attacker fired point-blank, directly killing the Israeli forces individuals.
Israeli army confirmed that multiple Israeli security personnel were at the scene and the victims were members of Israel’s Border Crossing Authority.
The shooter had been executed immediately.
Israeli security since then has been on high alert. The border crossing has been closed in both directions until further notice, according to Al Jazeera citing a Jordanian security source. Also, the Jordanian Ministry of Interior stated that official authorities are investigating the incident.
Witnesses reported increased inspections and harsher treatment of workers and truck drivers at the Israeli-occupied Palestinian side of the crossing following the shooting.
Luciano Zaccara, a research associate professor of Gulf politics at Qatar University, says the Israeli and Jordanian authorities temporarily closing only the King Hussien (Allenby) Bridge, and not crossings between Israel and Jordan, it’s likely that only the occupied West Bank will be “isolated”.
“This gives you an idea that the main target for these new security measures will be Palestinians in [occupied] West Bank and not precisely Jordanians or the Palestinian population that lives in Jordan,” Zaccara told Al Jazeera.
