DaysofPal- The Hamas Movement has stated that it will not be involved in any administrative arrangements for the post-war governance of the Gaza Strip unless they are based on a national consensus.
“It is not necessary for Hamas to be part of the administrative arrangements in Gaza. It is not interested in that and does not want to be in these arrangements at all,” Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem told Anadolu Agency.
Qassem emphasized that any future governance structure in Gaza must be rooted in Palestinian unity and not influenced by external forces.
“Any arrangements for Gaza’s future after the [Israeli] aggression must be based on national consensus, and we will facilitate this. Hamas will not allow any external force to interfere,” he added.
He also stressed the urgency of rebuilding Gaza after months of destruction. These arrangements, he said, should lead to “launching a serious and genuine reconstruction process to save our people in Gaza from the catastrophe they have endured” due to Israel’s war.
“Hamas will not be an obstacle to any arrangements achieved through national consensus that initiate reconstruction in Gaza,” Qassem reaffirmed, adding that his movement has shown flexibility in shaping political and administrative approaches for post-war governance.
In February, he noted that Hamas had agreed to multiple proposals, including forming a national consensus government and accepting an Egyptian plan to establish a community support committee to manage Gaza.
The United States is reportedly supporting a contentious plan to turn Gaza into a posh neighborhood known as the “Riviera of the Middle East” while barring the return of displaced Palestinians.
Israel supports this plan, but Hamas has strongly rejected it, insisting that the Gaza Strip must be governed by Palestinians. Several Arab states have also opposed any attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians from their land.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid recently proposed that Egypt take over Gaza’s administration for 15 years in exchange for canceling its foreign debt. However, Egypt firmly rejected the proposal, according to the official Egyptian news agency.
