DaysofPal- Ismail Al-Thawabteh, head of the Government Media Office (GMO) in Gaza, announced Wednesday that the powerful storm that hit the Gaza Strip on Tuesday caused massive destruction to roughly 22,000 tents housing displaced families, leaving more than 288,000 people exposed to the harsh weather.
Al-Thawabteh said in a press briefing that the storm inflicted an estimated $3.5 million in damages after heavy rain inundated large sections of displacement camps, making them unfit for even temporary shelter.
He explained that makeshift sewage systems sustained severe damage, water flooded school corridors used as shelters, and temporary water networks were disrupted, deepening the already dire humanitarian situation.
He added that significant losses were recorded in the food sector, with large stocks of aid spoiling and supplies intended for distribution destroyed. More than ten mobile medical clinics were also forced out of service, and essential medicines and equipment were lost due to the difficulty of reaching flooded areas.
Conditions worsened as unstable weather persisted from Monday night through Tuesday evening. Continuous rainfall has added to the suffering of displaced families living in tents.
Footage from across the Gaza Strip shows dozens of tents completely flooded, with water soaking mattresses and clothing, pushing families to seek any dry spot for shelter.
Rainwater also entered an operating room at the Kuwaiti Field Hospital in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, while accumulated water on roads disrupted movement for pedestrians and donkey carts alike.
