DaysofPal- Gaza City was once the center of Palestinian life, a place where families thrived, children filled classrooms, and markets buzzed with energy.
Before the war, the city was home to hundreds of thousands of people, representing more than half of Gaza’s population of 2.2 million. It was not only the largest Palestinian city in the occupied territories but also a hub of commerce, education, and culture.
Yet even then, its people lived under the weight of decades of occupation, suffocating restrictions, and economic hardship.
That fragile life was shattered when Israel launched its war on October 7, 2023. Gaza City was among the first targets. What followed was months of bombardment and encirclement that came to be known as the Siege of Gaza City. According to Oxfam, nearly half a million Palestinians, along with 200 Israelis and other captives, were trapped in what it called a “siege within a siege.” Families endured starvation, thirst, and fear with no way to escape.
On January 19, 2025, a temporary ceasefire brought a brief and fragile pause. For a moment, people felt a sliver of relief, daring to hope that the nightmare might end. But that hope was short-lived. Within months, the bombs fell again, killing hundreds many of them civilians who had already survived so much loss.
Now, in August 2025, Gaza City faces yet another dark chapter. Israel’s security cabinet has approved plans to seize the city, and the military has announced preparations for the forced displacement of up to one million Palestinians. For a city that once represented Palestinian resilience and identity, this looming mass expulsion feels like the final attempt to erase it from existence.
Once the beating heart of Palestinian life, Gaza City now stands broken, a symbol of devastation and exile. Its streets are scarred, its homes reduced to rubble, and its people live in unbearable uncertainty. The city that once carried dreams now carries only the weight of grief, its future hanging by a thread
