Days of Palestine – Jerusalem

Following the end of US President Joe Biden’s visit to the region, the Israeli occupation began promoting the establishment of 2,000 new settlement units in the occupied city of Jerusalem, which would separate the towns of Beit Safafa and Sharafat, and the rest of the Jerusalem neighborhoods.

The Israeli occupation authorities are encircling Beit Safafa and besieging it with new settlements, most notably a plan to establish settlement units in the settlements of “Givat Hamatos” and “Givat Hashaked” on lands, most of which the occupation stole from its Palestinian residents.

According to the Israeli “Peace Now” movement; After Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid ordered the cancellation of the planned discussion of the Jerusalem District Planning Committee, which was supposed to be held on July 18, in order to avoid embarrassment during Biden’s visit, the discussion was set for July 25.

They added that “the planning committee will already discuss the deposit of two plans to build 2,000 units, which would deal a severe blow to the possibility of a two-state solution and the development of Jerusalem as a Palestinian capital.”

They explained that the “Givat Hashakid” scheme near the town of Beit Safafa, and the “Lower Canal” scheme between the settlements of “Har Homa” and “Givat Hamatos”, will work to close the last remaining corridor linking Beit Safafa and Sharafat, and the rest of the neighborhoods in Jerusalem.

The occupation authorities are continuing their activities to establish a network of roads, tunnels and bridges, within a settlement belt that wraps around Jerusalem, swallowing its lands and besieging it for the sake of completing its settlement project.

Meanwhile, the head of the Jerusalem Anti-Judaization Committee, Nasser Al-Hadmi, warned of the danger of these settlement plans on the city of Jerusalem, which will lead to its separation from its strategic Palestinian depth from the southern side, Beit Jala and Bethlehem, in addition to completing the policy of cordons that the occupation worked to establish in the settlements located around the occupied city.

He asserted that the occupation seeks to impose more closure and tightness on the city, especially the southern region, separating it from the southern West Bank with a full settlement belt, in addition to the penetration of settlers into Palestinian society, so that Palestinian cities become islands living in the settlement perimeter.
