DaysofPal- In a devastating blow to the already dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, all bakeries have been forced to close due to severe shortages of flour and diesel.
The closure marks a critical turning point, as food insecurity spirals into a full-blown famine threatening the lives of over 2.4 million Palestinians.
Abdel Nasser Al-Ajrami , head of the Bakeries Owners Association in Gaza, confirmed in a press statement on Tuesday that all bakeries in the enclave had ceased operations.
“The World Food Program informed us today that flour has run out in its stores,” Al-Ajrami explained, noting that the ongoing suffocating Israeli blockade, coupled with the complete closure of crossings, has prevented the entry of essential supplies like flour and diesel.
The shutdown of bakeries—many of which are supported by the World Food Program (WFP)—has left Gaza’s population without access to bread, a staple food for survival. Al-Ajrami warned that the closure will exacerbate hunger across the Strip, particularly among displaced families and vulnerable communities.
“Bakeries will not operate until the occupation opens the crossings and allows the entry of necessary materials for work,” he stated.
A Crisis Beyond Breaking Point
The WFP, which supports 18 bakeries in Gaza, revealed earlier this week that its food stockpile is sufficient for less than two weeks. Supplies at bakeries and food distribution kitchens have dwindled to unprecedented lows, leaving millions at risk of starvation.
Compounding the crisis, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that Israeli occupation has rejected 40 out of 49 requests from humanitarian organizations to coordinate aid deliveries between March 18 and 24. This obstruction has severely hampered efforts to deliver essential supplies, including fuel needed to power bakeries and other critical infrastructure.
The UN High Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs also condemned Israeli decision to ban the entry of humanitarian aid through all land crossings into Gaza, describing it as the longest closure of its kind since October 2023. The agency warned that this blockade has reversed the gains achieved during the recent ceasefire, plunging survivors back into despair.
Calls for Immediate Action
Al-Ajrami issued an urgent appeal to the international community to pressure Israeli occupation to reopen the crossings and allow the entry of vital supplies. “The world must act now to prevent famine from worsening in the Strip,” he urged.
Without immediate intervention, the consequences will be catastrophic, with children, the elderly, and the sick bearing the brunt of the suffering.
Humanitarian organizations have echoed these calls, emphasizing that the blockade violates international law and constitutes a collective punishment of Gaza’s civilian population. The deliberate obstruction of food and fuel supplies is widely seen as part of a broader strategy to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and force mass displacement.
Famine Hits People
The closure of bakeries is a stark indicator of the deepening catastrophe in Gaza. With no flour or diesel available, the population faces an imminent threat of famine.
Bread, a lifeline for many families, is now inaccessible, leaving millions struggling to survive on dwindling resources.
As the blockade persists, the resilience of Gaza’s people is being tested like never before. International silence and inaction risk enabling what experts warn could become one of the worst famines in modern history.
A Moral Test for Humanity
The unfolding tragedy in Gaza demands urgent global attention and action. Will the international community rise to defend the basic human rights of Palestinians, or will it allow this man-made famine to claim countless lives?
The clock is ticking, and the people of Gaza cannot wait any longer.
The question remains: Will the world stand idly by, or will it intervene to prevent a humanitarian disaster of unimaginable proportions?
