DaysofPal-The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor condemned on Wednesday the US decision to impose sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.
In a statement sent to Safa News Agency, the Monitor said the move reflects the official U.S. stance against any independent attempt to expose the truth about the genocide and systematic violations committed by the Israeli occupation in Gaza.
It stressed that the decision marks a dangerous deviation from the core principles of international law and human rights and constitutes a direct attack on the United Nations and its mechanisms, threatening the independence of UN special rapporteurs.
“Albanese has been among the few voices to demonstrate moral and professional courage in describing what is happening in Gaza as genocide committed in full view of the world,” the Monitor said.
It emphasized that Albanese’s work is entirely legitimate and aligned with her official mandate from the Human Rights Council to monitor violations in the occupied Palestinian territories. Her documentation and calls for accountability are at the very heart of her responsibilities.
“Instead of re-evaluating its disastrous policies regarding Israeli crimes, Washington chose to punish the one exposing its complicity,” the statement continued.
The Monitor described the sanctions as a desperate attempt to silence the truth and a warning message to anyone who dares to defend the victims of Israeli aggression.
It affirmed its full support for Albanese and her principled stance grounded in international law and human conscience, calling for wide international condemnation of the sanctions and real solidarity.
Finally, the Euro-Med Monitor urged the United Nations, the UN Human Rights Council, other special rapporteurs, and the international community at large not to remain silent and to act swiftly to protect the independence of the international human rights system.
