The European Union reaffirmed on Monday, 19 June 2023 that the Israeli settlements are illegal under international law.
In a statement, the spokesperson for the European Union Peter Stano said that the Union is concerned about the changes adopted by the Israeli government to the settlement planning and management process which will accelerate the planning and approval of settlements, calling on Israel not to proceed with plans for more construction in settlements.
The European Union also expressed its concern about the recent Israeli raid in Jenin during which 5 Palestinians were killed and 93 others were injured.
Last week, Israeli occupation informed the US administration of its intention to announce the approval of building at least 4,000 settlement units in West Bank settlements.
The new Israeli government coalition, led by far-right parties is pushing ahead with plans to establish settlement units on the lands of the occupied West Bank in favor of illegal settlement expansion.
Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank and East Jerusalem has continued under every Israeli government since Israel captured the territories in the 1967 Middle East war.
It’s worth noting that more than 650,000 colonial settlers were distributed among 164 illegal settlements and 124 outposts built on the stolen lands of occupied West Bank and Jerusalem.
In 2022, the Israeli occupation government approved 83 plans to build 8,288 new illegal settlement units in the occupied West Bank and 2,635 other units in occupied Jerusalem.
The West Bank and Jerusalem lands are occupied territories based on International law due to this all Israeli settlement-building activities there are illegal.
