DaysofPal — Khalil al-Hayya, the newly elected head of Hamas’s Political Bureau, said the Movement will continue coordinating with regional mediators to reinforce the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip following his appointment earlier this week.

Al-Hayya made the remarks during a phone call with Hassan Rashad, head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service, who congratulated him on his election and praised the confidence placed in him by Hamas’s leadership.

In a statement, Hamas said al-Hayya expressed appreciation for Egypt’s longstanding role in supporting the Palestinian cause, particularly its mediation efforts to secure and maintain the ceasefire.

He reaffirmed the Movement’s commitment to continued coordination with Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey to stabilize the truce and support broader efforts to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Al-Hayya also stressed the need to secure a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and accelerate reconstruction efforts, describing both as key priorities for the next phase of negotiations.

His appointment was announced earlier this week, succeeding Yahya Sinwar, who was martyred in October 2024 during clashes with Israeli occupation forces in Rafah, southern Gaza.

The current ceasefire, which took effect on October 10, 2025, was brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey with U.S. backing under a two-phase framework.

Despite the agreement, Palestinian officials have accused the Israeli occupation of repeatedly violating the ceasefire through continued airstrikes and live-fire attacks.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 1,158 Palestinians have been killed and 3,756 others injured in Israeli attacks and ceasefire violations since the truce took effect.

Diplomatic efforts to advance the second phase of the agreement remain ongoing.

On June 8, 2026, mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey met in Cairo with representatives of Palestinian factions to discuss mechanisms for implementing the next stage of the agreement and advancing negotiations.
