DaysofPal- Gaza City is on the brink of an environmental and health disaster, Gaza municipal authorities warned, issuing an urgent appeal to the international community and humanitarian organizations for immediate intervention.
The influx of displaced people, coupled with the devastation wrought by recent Israeli bombardment, has pushed the city’s already fragile sewage system to the breaking point.
Key sewage treatment plants, including Baqqara Station No. 5, Al-Samar 6A, and Al-Zeitoun 7B, crucial for processing thousands of cubic meters of wastewater daily, have been severely damaged.
The municipality reports critical equipment and infrastructure are failing, crippled by the impact of the conflict. These stations, reliant on outdated generators frequently disrupted by ongoing power outages, are at high risk of complete shutdown.
The consequences are dire. Overflowing sewage threatens to inundate residential areas, creating a significant public health hazard.
Contaminated environments and the spread of disease, particularly among vulnerable children and the elderly, are imminent dangers.
The municipality stressed the urgent need for assistance to repair the damaged sewage infrastructure and provide essential equipment, including new generators, to combat the impact of power cuts. A reliable supply of spare parts and ongoing maintenance support are also critical for restoring and sustaining operations.
The crisis is further compounded by the destruction of key pumping lines on Rashid Street and Street No. 10, exacerbating environmental damage along Gaza’s coastline. Extensive destruction has also been reported at sewage stations in the western part of the city, particularly at Station No. 11, which processes 35,000 cubic meters of wastewater daily.
Reiterating its urgent plea, the Gaza Municipality urged the international community and relevant organizations to take immediate action to safeguard the city’s environment and public health. It stressed that failure to intervene would accelerate the worsening humanitarian crisis, leading to an even greater catastrophe.
