Aws Shabib: Tale of a Palestinian Boy that Passed the Tawjihi with a Body Thick With Wounds

Among those who celebrated passing tawjihi (the equivalent of a high school diploma) on Saturday, July 30th was Aws Shabib.

After a long treatment journey that did not end yet, the wounded Aws Mufid Shabib was able to defy the circumstances and write his name in the record of successful high school students, to bring joy to the home of his family, who lived through difficult days of anxiety for him.

Aws was critically wounded during violent confrontations in the town of Burqa, northwest of Nablus, in the northern occupied West Bank on December 25, and miraculously escaped after rumors of his death.

As a result of his injury, he spent about three months in intensive care in the hospital, then continued his treatment journey between his home and the hospital until May, completely cutting off his studies.

During this period, he underwent six surgeries, during which he lost half of his internal organs. The spleen, one of his kidneys, half of the liver, pancreas, parts of the blood vessels, and the abdominal wall were removed.

Shabib, who got a grade of 69 in the literary section, told “Safa” agency that he insisted on passing the Tawjihi this year and not waiting until next year, in order to deliver a message of resistance to the occupation, which wanted to kill him physically or destroy him morally.

He added that he would not have obtained this result without his will and determination, as he used to pray night and day in order to follow up on the lessons he had missed.

He also refers to the care that his family provided him with private lessons at home, as well as the cooperation shown by education by enabling him to take official exams at home.

Although he has not completed his treatment journey and is awaiting yet a seventh surgery, he intends to continue his educational journey and sign up for college immediately and without interruption.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Education announced the results of the high school diploma –  in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Jerusalem, and abroad.

The Ministry of Education stated, during a press conference held at the headquarters of the General Authority for Radio and Television in Ramallah, that the success rate this year was 68.12 distributed among all branches.

The Ministry pointed out that the number of applicants for the exam in all branches amounted to (85,302) participants, of whom (58,107) passed.
