DaysofPal- The director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, has pledged that Gaza’s medical teams will continue fulfilling their humanitarian mission despite enduring devastating personal and professional losses under Israel’s ongoing assault.
Abu Salmiya said in a statement on Saturday that doctors, nurses, and paramedics in Al-Shifa and across Gaza’s hospitals are working in “conditions that exceed human capacity,” yet remain steadfast in saving lives and treating the wounded.
Earlier in the day, an Israeli airstrike hit Abu Salmiya’s family home in western Gaza City, killing his brother and several relatives.
“Despite the destruction of our homes and the loss of our loved ones, we are committed to our duty,” he said, stressing that Gaza’s medical staff continue to operate amid a near-total collapse of the health system, crippling shortages of medicine and equipment, and power outages.
Abu Salmiya described the resilience of health workers as the “last line of defense” against the Israeli policy of ethnic cleansing in Gaza.
He condemned the targeting of hospitals, medical staff, and residential homes as an attempt by the Israeli occupation to break Palestinian willpower.
“These attempts will fail in the face of the determination of doctors, nurses, and volunteers who are risking their lives for their humanitarian duty,” he affirmed.
He added that the attack on his home would not deter him from his post: “I will remain at my station alongside my people, and medical teams will stand firm until the very last moment. We believe our mission is a sacred trust, and we will not abandon our people in these critical times.”
Gaza is witnessing one of the deadliest escalations in recent years, with relentless Israeli bombardment, forced displacement, and systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure, leaving residents in an unlivable situation.
