DaysofPal- On World Press Freedom Day, the Government Media Office in Gaza said Palestinian journalists are facing an “unprecedented catastrophic reality,” with reporting in the enclave turned into a “life-threatening mission” under the ongoing war.
In a statement marking the occasion, the office reported that 262 journalists and media workers have been killed since the start of the conflict, describing the figure as one of the highest recorded globally for journalist casualties in a single war. It stressed that the toll reflects a systematic policy to silence the Palestinian voice and prevent the transmission of truth.
The statement added that 50 journalists have been detained under harsh conditions, while three others remain missing amid growing concerns about their fate. More than 420 journalists have also been injured, some suffering severe wounds that resulted in amputations and permanent disabilities.
The office said that these actions constitute a “blatant violation” of international humanitarian law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, and may amount to war crimes requiring international accountability.
The statement held Israel fully responsible for the targeting, killing, and detention of journalists. It also accused several countries, namely the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and France, of providing political and military cover for these actions.
It warned that continued international silence represents a “serious undermining of the global justice system,” calling on the international community and media and human rights organizations, particularly the International Federation of Journalists and the Arab Journalists Union, to take immediate steps to halt the targeting of journalists in Gaza.
The office also urged the provision of urgent international protection for media workers and called for those responsible for the violations to be pursued before international courts.
The statement concluded with a defiant message, asserting that despite the immense personal risk and the loss of dozens of colleagues, the mission of Palestinian journalists remains unshaken. “The message of Palestinian journalists will remain present despite the targeting,” the office declared, “and the voice of Palestine will not be silenced.”
