DayofPal—A Macquarie University lecturer, Dr Jumana Bayeh, says she was filmed without consent, followed, and threatened on campus after a lecture on Middle East politics that included criticism of Israel.
She says a man disrupted her class, filmed her despite being told not to, became verbally aggressive toward a student, and later followed her outside the building, telling her “I can find you,” prompting her to call campus security and students to form a protective circle around her.
“At one point, he said, ‘I can find you’,” Bayeh added.
“That gave me the chills. I felt sickened by it.”
“He looked a bit older than the cohort, maybe in his early 30s, so he looked a bit distinguishable from the rest.”
“It seemed like he was filming me because he was holding his phone up to his face.”
Bayeh says this was part of a broader pattern of targeting linked to her academic discussions of Palestine and Israel, including previous incidents involving students and complaints about her lectures.
She added that she has faced media and political pressure over her classroom content, including investigations and complaints triggered by her statements on issues such as Gaza, Lebanon, and the Nakba.
The university responded to the incident quickly, according to Bayeh, though she also says earlier complaints about student misconduct were not adequately addressed.
