DayofPal— Global Sumud Flotilla has reported that two of its participants remain in Israeli custody after being detained during the raid of a maritime convoy in international waters earlier this week.
The group says Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Ávila were transferred to Shikma Prison in Askalan following their detention by Israeli forces near Crete.
According to the flotilla’s statement, the two men have not been formally charged and are being held without clarity regarding the legal basis for their detention.
The flotilla and diplomatic sources cited in its statement said that Thiago Ávila reported being subjected to mistreatment in custody, including beatings and medical neglect.
The Brazilian embassy is said to have observed visible injuries during a monitored visit and has called for immediate access to appropriate medical care.
The statement also saya Ávila has been on a hunger strike since his detention, consuming only water. Saif Abukeshek is also reported by the group to be refusing food in solidarity.
The group says both detainees were part of a maritime convoy intercepted in international waters and argues that their transfer into custody raises concerns about international legal procedures, including due process and jurisdiction.
It further adds that embassies representing the detainees have not been given clear information regarding charges or legal grounds for detention. Legal representatives are reportedly seeking access to the individuals.
Saif Abukeshek is a Spanish-Swedish national of Palestinian origin, while Thiago Ávila is a Brazilian citizen. They were the only two participants not released after the interception of the flotilla, according to organizers.
The Global Sumud Flotilla has characterized the detention as unlawful and has called for international intervention, including diplomatic pressure from Spain, Sweden, and Brazil.
The flotilla is urging governments, international organizations, and human rights bodies to: Secure the release of the detainees, investigate allegations of mistreatment, clarify the legal grounds for detention, ensure compliance with international human rights standards.
