Vehicle Shortages and Infrastructure Decay Drive Gaza’s Waste Crisis

DaysofPal – The Gaza Municipality has issued a warning about the city’s deteriorating waste problem because there is a serious lack of vehicles required for garbage collection and transportation. The shortfall has led to the accumulation of waste in streets and informal dumping sites, increasing health and environmental risks for residents.

In a press statement issued Friday, the municipality said the waste management sector faces mounting challenges. Many of the available vehicles are old, heavily worn, and unable to operate regularly, particularly those used to empty containers. As a result, bins fill quickly and remain uncollected for extended periods.

Transporting waste to the Abu Jarad landfill south of the city requires additional vehicles, further compounding the problem.

With the arrival of Ramadan, the municipality recorded a noticeable rise in waste volumes due to increased household consumption. The proportion of rapidly decomposing organic waste has also grown, heightening health and environmental dangers in residential neighborhoods.

Municipal officials called for urgent projects to improve waste collection and transportation, along with stronger night collection efforts to reduce street accumulation. They warned that the continued deterioration of services contributes to the spread of insects and rodents, rising public complaints, heavier operational burdens, and a decline in overall cleanliness across the city.

The crisis unfolds during ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10. According to available data, 618 Palestinians have been killed since the agreement entered into force, including 198 children and 85 women, and 1,663 others have been injured.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has continued a large-scale military campaign in Gaza with support from the United States and Europe. The offensive has involved widespread killing, destruction, displacement, detention, and restrictions on food and essential supplies, despite international appeals and orders from the International Court of Justice calling for it to stop.

The conflict has resulted in more than 243,000 Palestinians killed or injured, most of them women and children. More than 11,000 people remain missing. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced, famine conditions have claimed additional lives, and large-scale destruction has affected most cities and areas across the Gaza Strip.
