Trump Proposes Seizing Gaza, Turning it into “Freedom Zone”

DayofPal– U.S. President Donald Trump ignited a firestorm of criticism on Thursday after calling for the United States to seize control of Gaza and transform the war-torn territory into what he termed a “freedom zone.”

His remarks doubled down on earlier proposals that have drawn accusations of forced displacement and ethnic cleansing.

Speaking to reporters following a closed-door meeting with international business leaders in Doha, Trump described a sweeping vision for Gaza that involves American oversight and a radical reshaping of the enclave’s future, one notably excluding its current Palestinian population.

“Gaza has been a territory of death and destruction for many years,” Trump said. “I have concepts for Gaza that I think are very good — make it a freedom zone. Let the United States get involved and make it just a freedom zone.”

Referring to recent aerial images of widespread devastation from Israeli bombardments, Trump added, “I have aerial shots where, I mean, there’s practically no building standing. It’s not like you’re trying to save something. There’s no building. People are living under the rubble of buildings that collapsed, which is not acceptable.”

The proposal echoes a controversial idea Trump previously floated, which aims at permanently removing Palestinians from Gaza and redeveloping the coastal strip into a gleaming, resort-style zone he once dubbed the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

Under this plan, the U.S. would effectively assume ownership of the land, repopulating it with people from around the world while displacing its native Palestinian residents.

As part of that broader vision, Trump also suggested neighboring countries, including Egypt and Jordan, accept displaced Palestinians, a notion both governments have unequivocally rejected.

Palestinian leaders and residents of Gaza have condemned the proposal as a brazen attempt at ethnic cleansing, and Arab nations have largely rallied around Egypt’s alternative reconstruction initiative, one focused on rebuilding Gaza without displacing its people.

Trump’s remarks come amid escalating Israeli military operations in Gaza, raising concerns of a deepening humanitarian crisis. As Trump revives his controversial ideas, international observers warn of the growing political and ethical ramifications of forced displacement masquerading as redevelopment.

For now, Trump’s “freedom zone” remains a proposal without support from regional stakeholders or the broader international community, but its implications are already reverberating across a region in crisis.
