UN Commissioner Calls for Immediate Investigation into Israeli Crimes in Gaza

Volker Türk

DaysofPal- In a stark condemnation of escalating war in Gaza and breaches of international law, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called for an urgent, independent, and comprehensive international investigation into what he described as “extremely serious, multiple, and profound violations” committed by Israeli occupation forces in the Gaza Strip.

The appeal comes amid mounting concerns over the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the region, with widespread displacement and civilian casualties reaching alarming levels.

Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, Türk emphasized that accountability must be prioritized to address the gravity of the situation. He warned that the continued bombing of Palestinian refugee camps by the Israeli occupation forces, coupled with forced displacement orders affecting 1.9 million people, or 85% of Gaza’s population, constitutes flagrant violations of international humanitarian law. The crisis has reached a critical tipping point, with no safe havens left for civilians to seek refuge.

Forced Displacement and Evacuation Orders Under Scrutiny

The High Commissioner strongly criticized evacuation orders issued by Israeli occupation forces, stating they are inconsistent with international legal standards. According to Türk, forced displacement is prohibited under international humanitarian law unless it is carried out to safeguard civilians or due to imperative military necessity—a threshold he argued has not been met in this case.

Türk also referenced Security Council Resolution 2735, adopted in June 2024, which reaffirmed the international community’s opposition to any attempts at demographic or territorial changes within the Gaza Strip. He noted that any reduction of the Strip’s area would constitute a clear violation of international law and further destabilize an already volatile region.

Adding to his concerns, Türk highlighted inflammatory statements made by senior Israeli officials advocating for the annexation of territories within Gaza and the forced transfer of its population elsewhere. Such rhetoric, he warned, could amount to incitement to commit international crimes.

“Any proposals involving annexation or population transfers are illegal and pose a direct threat to regional stability,” Türk declared. “The international community cannot afford to turn a blind eye to these dangerous developments.”

A Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolding

The humanitarian toll of the conflict continues to mount, with millions of Palestinians grappling with dire living conditions exacerbated by prolonged military operations. Necessities such as food, water, shelter, and medical care remain scarce, leaving countless families vulnerable and without recourse. Türk urged immediate action to protect civilians and ensure their access to essential services, while calling on all parties to respect international law.

Calls for Accountability and Justice

The High Commissioner reiterated the need for accountability, stressing that impunity only perpetuates cycles of crimes and suffering. An impartial investigation, he argued, is essential to uncovering the truth behind the reported atrocities and ensuring justice for victims. Türk’s call echoes growing demands from human rights organizations and global leaders, who have condemned the disproportionate use of force against Palestinian civilians.

As the world watches the deteriorating situation in Gaza, Türk’s statement underscores the urgent moral and legal imperative to act. Failure to do so, he warned, risks undermining the foundations of international law and eroding trust in the global system designed to protect human dignity.
