DayofPal– Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders, MSF) expressed profound sorrow and outrage on Friday following the death of one of its team members, Hussam Al-Loulu, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on April 1 in southwest Deir Al-Balah, central Gaza.
58-year-old Al-Loulu was killed alongside his wife and 28-year-old daughter in what MSF described as a “brutal attack.” His death marks the 11th fatality among MSF personnel since the start of the Israeli genocide in Gaza, and the second within a fortnight, underscoring the relentless dangers faced by humanitarian workers in the besieged enclave.
Al-Loulu had joined MSF in December 2024, serving as a security guard at the organization’s emergency unit in Khan Younis. In a statement, MSF lauded his humility, unwavering commitment, and compassion for those in need, characterizing him as a valued member of their medical mission.
“This loss is a devastating reminder of the human cost of this war,” the organization said. “Hussam was more than a colleague; he was a dedicated humanitarian whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence.”
Since Israel resumed its intensified military atrocities on March 18, the death toll among Palestinians has surged. According to MSF, approximately 1,300 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 3,000 others wounded, predominantly women and children, as Israeli air and ground assaults continue across the Gaza Strip.
MSF reiterated its urgent call for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians, including aid workers who remain on the frontlines of an escalating humanitarian catastrophe.
“The killing must end,” the organization said in its statement. “This bloodshed cannot be allowed to continue unchecked. Civilians and those who serve them must be protected under international law.”
Humanitarian organizations have increasingly warned that the targeting of aid workers constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian principles. The death of Al-Loulu adds to a grim tally of hundreds of aid workers reportedly killed in Gaza since the start of the genocidal campaign, now entering its 18th month.
As the attack rages on, MSF and other organizations continue to demand international accountability and concrete measures to ensure the safety of civilians trapped in the war.
