UNRWA sounds alarm on growing health risks from mounting waste in Gaza

Sewage and Trash Crisis in Gaza Spurs Health Catastrophe

DaysofPal- The ongoing crisis in Gaza has reached alarming new levels, as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) once again raised the alarm about the escalating health risks posed by the mounting waste in the region.

The agency warned that the piles of garbage accumulating throughout Gaza are “putting people’s health and lives at risk,” further exacerbating the already dire environmental crisis that has plagued the area. The collapse of solid waste management systems, caused by the ongoing conflict and restrictions, is rapidly facilitating the spread of infectious diseases, according to multiple UN agencies.

For weeks, the situation in Gaza has worsened, with mountains of waste accumulating in the streets, creating a breeding ground for diseases. In a statement from the Gaza Municipality, it was revealed that about 170,000 tons of garbage are currently scattered across the city, with no immediate solution in sight.

The municipality has accused Israel of blocking municipal teams from reaching the main landfill east of the city, especially after the destruction of 80% of the municipality’s machinery in Israeli airstrikes.
In Gaza City, the mounting waste has reached critical levels. “Gaza City is facing a major health and environmental disaster due to the accumulation of about 170,000 tons of garbage in the streets and temporary landfills,” the statement read.

Municipal teams have struggled to manage the waste, shifting it from residential areas to makeshift landfills within the city itself. With the ongoing conflict, these temporary landfills are becoming increasingly unmanageable.

The situation is particularly dire for the many displaced Palestinians, who are being forced to live near these piles of rotting waste. Many have sought refuge in overcrowded refugee camps or makeshift shelters, where the stench of garbage is unbearable, and the health risks are ever-growing.

“We can’t sleep, we can’t eat, we can’t drink. The smell is killing us,” said Ahmed Shaloula, a displaced resident from Gaza City now living in Khan Younis. His words reflect the daily suffering endured by countless others who find themselves surrounded by unsanitary conditions.
The environmental disaster is compounded by Israel’s restrictions on humanitarian aid and resources, making it nearly impossible for relief efforts to address the mounting health risks. Despite a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas signed in January, the situation on the ground remains dire, with no immediate relief in sight for the people of Gaza.

Gaza’s infrastructure, already heavily damaged by Israel’s relentless bombardment, is in tatters. The Gaza Strip has become a wasteland of destroyed buildings, wrecked roads, and scattered rubble. Since the beginning of Israel’s offensive in October 2023, more than 50,208 Palestinians have been killed, with the majority being women and children. The ongoing violence has not only claimed countless lives but has also obliterated essential services, including waste management, sanitation, and healthcare.

As Gaza grapples with an unprecedented environmental and health crisis, the international community has called for urgent action to address the mounting challenges. However, the blockade on aid and the destruction of critical infrastructure make it increasingly difficult to provide relief to the millions of Palestinians suffering in the region. The health risks posed by the uncontrolled accumulation of waste are only adding to the challenges facing those who are already struggling to survive amidst the chaos of war.
