Civilian, aid worker, and World Central Kitchen volunteer lives lost to Israel’s genocide in Gaza

DaysofPal- The World Central Kitchen (WCK), an international relief organization, is mourning the loss of one of its volunteers in Gaza following an Israeli bombing that targeted a site near one of its kitchens.

The volunteer, identified only as Jalal, was tragically killed while distributing meals in the region. Six others were also injured in the attack. This brings the total number of WCK workers killed in Gaza to 12 within the past year.

“Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the loss of one of our volunteers in Gaza due to Israeli strikes near one of our kitchens while distributing meals,” the World Central Kitchen wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The organization went on to honor Jalal’s sacrifice, highlighting the perilous conditions faced by those who continue to serve amid the ongoing violence. Despite the dangers, WCK has remained committed to providing vital food assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, often cooking meals over open flames to support those enduring the hardship of the ongoing conflict.

This tragic event is not the first time that WCK has been targeted in Gaza. In April 2024, an Israeli military strike hit a WCK convoy in Deir al-Balah, killing seven staff members. The victims were from various countries, including Australia, Poland, Britain, the United States, Canada, and Palestine. These attacks are part of a broader pattern of targeting humanitarian aid workers and organizations, who face increasing risks as the conflict continues.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has worsened, with thousands of Palestinians at risk of acute hunger and malnutrition. The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) issued a dire warning on Thursday, noting that food stocks in Gaza are dwindling, and aid crossings have been closed as part of Israel’s ongoing military operations.

The WFP also stated that the intensification of Israel military activity has severely hampered food assistance operations, placing the lives of aid workers and civilians in grave danger.

According to the UN, the latest Israeli airstrikes have led to the deaths of several humanitarian workers. Over the past week alone, eight more aid workers have been killed, bringing the total number of humanitarian staff killed since the onset of the conflict in October 2023 to 399.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also reported that 142,000 Palestinians have been displaced from their homes within a single week, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis.

Israel’s relentless bombardment of Gaza has caused severe damage to both infrastructure and civilian life. Between March 18 and 25, 792 Palestinians were killed, and 1,633 were injured, with women and children accounting for more than half of the casualties.

On March 18, Israel abruptly ended a fragile two-month ceasefire, resuming its heavy airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza. The humanitarian situation has only worsened since then, with aid efforts inside Gaza increasingly crippled by blockades and restrictions imposed by Israeli forces.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health says at least 50,208 Palestinians have been confirmed dead and 113,910 have been wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. Gaza’s Government Media Office also updated its death toll to more than 61,700, saying thousands of Palestinians missing under the rubble are presumed dead.
