DaysofPal – The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, has warned that the occupied West Bank is experiencing its most severe humanitarian crisis since 1967 as a result of ongoing Israeli military assaults targeting refugee camps and the forced displacement of tens of thousands of residents.
In a post published Friday on the social media platform X, Lazzarini stated that “the occupied West Bank is witnessing its worst humanitarian crisis since 1967,” highlighting the devastating impact of Israeli military actions on Palestinian refugee communities.
He noted that one year after the launch of the Israeli military operation known as “Iron Wall,” approximately 33,000 people remain forcibly displaced from Palestinian refugee camps in the northern West Bank.
Lazzarini said that extensive demolitions by Israeli forces are still reshaping large portions of the camps, seriously impairing any chances of rehabilitation and return.
He stressed that UNRWA teams are working on the ground to assist recently displaced Palestinian refugees who have been pushed deeper into poverty. He warned that these communities are facing the crisis in the absence of viable alternatives for accessing essential services, including healthcare, education, and social support.
Despite the increasingly difficult conditions, Lazzarini affirmed that UNRWA continues to operate across the West Bank. However, he emphasized that sustaining this work requires ongoing political backing and reliable financial support from UN member states.
He emphasized in his conclusion that the humanitarian situation in the occupied West Bank is likely to worsen and exacerbate the suffering of already vulnerable refugee populations in the absence of ongoing international assistance.
