DaysofPal- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has stated that the famine in Gaza City can be halted by reversing the ongoing catastrophe and flooding the area with massive UN humanitarian aid.
In a press statement today, Saturday, UNRWA said, “Our warehouses in Jordan and Egypt are full, with enough food, medicine, and hygiene supplies to fill 6,000 trucks. Israel must allow us to bring aid into Gaza.”
On Friday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the famine in Gaza as a man-made disaster, stressing that “Israel” must ensure the availability of food and medical supplies for Gaza’s population as the occupying power.
Guterres stated that the situation cannot be allowed to continue without accountability and called for an immediate ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access.
Meanwhile, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated that the emergence of famine in northern Gaza is a direct result of actions taken by the Israeli government and that deaths caused by starvation may amount to war crimes.
In a statement to reporters referencing a report from a global hunger monitoring group, Türk said:
“The famine declared by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) in Gaza Governorate is a direct consequence of Israeli government actions.”
Türk added: “Using starvation as a method of warfare is a war crime, and the resulting deaths could also constitute the war crime of deliberate killing.”
This came in response to the IPC’s declaration of famine in the Gaza Governorate starting mid-August 2025.
In its report released Friday, the IPC warned that the famine may spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis in central and southern Gaza in September.
The report noted that over half a million people in Gaza are facing famine, extreme need, and death, while another 1.07 million people, more than half the population, are experiencing emergency levels of acute food insecurity.
It also stated that over 132,000 children under five are at risk of death from severe malnutrition.
Despite aid trucks piling up at Gaza’s entry points, the Israeli occupation continues to block their entry or tightly control their distribution outside UN supervision, with quantities so minimal they’re described as “a drop in the ocean” by UN and international reports.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation, with U.S. support, has been carrying out a genocide in Gaza, involving killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring international calls and International Court of Justice orders to stop.
The Israeli genocide has resulted in killing 62,263 Palestinians, injuring 157,365 mostly women and children, with over 9,000 missing and hundreds of thousands displaced, while the Israeli-made famine has claimed 273 lives, including 112 children so far.
