DaysofPal- UNICEF has called for an urgent and large-scale delivery of humanitarian supplies into Gaza, warning that the situation remains dire despite the recent ceasefire bringing a glimmer of hope to millions trapped in the devastated enclave.
Rosalia Bollen, UNICEF’s communications specialist for Palestine, told Al Jazeera that while the truce offers “hope and relief” after two years of relentless Israeli war, the humanitarian needs on the ground are “massive and life-threatening.”
“The needs in the Gaza Strip after two years of relentless Israeli war and extreme deprivation, the needs are massive. So, every bit of aid, every bit of commercial supplies to enter will likely be life-saving,” Bollen said.
She stressed that UNICEF has recorded a sharp rise in acute malnutrition among children under the age of five, describing the situation as a “humanitarian emergency.”
“These children need access to medical supplies, nutrition support, food for familiesو and they cannot afford to wait,” she said.
Bollen emphasized that the unrestricted entry of humanitarian and commercial supplies would be vital in saving lives and preventing further deterioration of Gaza’s public health crisis.
“As for UNICEF, our agency alone would be able to fill over 1,300 trucks with life-saving supplies as soon as we’re allowed to do so,” she added.
The agency’s appeal comes amid growing international pressure for the Israeli occupation to allow unhindered humanitarian access into Gaza, where hospitals, shelters, and food systems have been crippled by the prolonged blockade and ongoing hostilities.
Humanitarian organizations warn that unless aid flows are restored immediately, Gaza’s fragile truce could give way to yet another cycle of human suffering.
