GazaHerald- In Gaza, joy has returned, but only halfway. As news of the ceasefire spreads, displaced Palestinians long to go home, yet their paths remain blocked and their future uncertain.
“It’s not complete excitement and happiness for people here,” one resident said, “as long as they’re not allowed to go back to their homes in the northern part of the Strip.”
Across the coastal road, families gather in anxious clusters, some in battered cars, others on carts pulled by donkeys, waiting for word that it’s finally safe to return. But for now, their happiness is suspended in limbo.
The Israeli military continues to block al-Rashid Street, Gaza’s only lifeline to the north, warning that Gaza City and its surroundings remain “dangerous combat zones.”
Early Thursday, the Israeli army reiterated its warning: the area north of the Gaza Valley is still under military control, and any movement toward the city or surrounding areas “is considered extremely dangerous.” The statement added that the army remains “prepared for any scenario,” keeping its forces on high alert across the Strip.
The restrictions have left displaced Palestinians feeling torn between the relief of survival and the pain of exile. “People want to believe this is the end,” said a local journalist, “but how can it be when they still can’t step foot in their own homes?”
Despite the ceasefire, many fear that this fragile calm merely pauses, not ends, the war. Skepticism runs deep that the American plan underpinning the truce serves only Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s interests, offering neither justice nor lasting peace for Palestinians.
“For now, hope exists,” a displaced father said, “but it’s mixed with anger and doubt. We’ve been here before, promises, negotiations, then more loss. Only what happens on the ground will tell us the truth.”
For two years, Gaza endured what many describe as a war of extermination. Over 67,000 Palestinians were killed and 169,000 injured, as Israel’s bombardment leveled homes, hospitals, and schools. Beyond the airstrikes, Israel imposed a blockade that starved the Strip, killing hundreds through deprivation and starvation.
