DaysofPal- The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that more than 10,000 children in Gaza City urgently need treatment for severe acute malnutrition, as the Israeli large-scale ground offensive continues against civilians there.
UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram said Tuesday that the mass displacement of families from Gaza City poses a “deadly threat” to the most vulnerable groups, with conditions worsening rapidly.
According to UNICEF, 26,000 children across the Gaza Strip are currently suffering from severe acute malnutrition, including more than 10,000 in Gaza City alone.
Data from August revealed that more than one in eight children screened in Gaza showed signs of severe malnutrition, the highest levels ever recorded.
In Gaza City, one in five children is affected.
Moreover, the agency also reported that nutrition centers in Gaza City were forced to shut down this week due to evacuation orders and intensified military operations, further restricting access to lifesaving care.
“It is inhumane to ask nearly half a million children, already traumatized by more than 700 days of continuous war, to flee from one hell to another,” Ingram said.
Since October 7, 2023, the ongoing Israeli genocidal assault on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of 64,964 Palestinians and injuries to 165,312 others, most of them women and children. The war, coupled with famine, has also killed at least 428 Palestinians, including 146 children, according to local health authorities.
