DaysofPal- The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has cautioned that severe winter weather is placing the lives of hundreds of thousands of displaced children and their families in Gaza at growing risk, as they continue to shelter in temporary and fragile conditions.
In a statement released Friday, UNICEF said the winter season has intensified existing dangers, particularly for families living in improvised shelters after widespread destruction across the Gaza Strip.
The agency reported that extensive damage to water and sanitation infrastructure has led to rainwater mixing with sewage and flooding residential areas, creating serious health hazards. Heavy rains have also caused numerous tents to collapse, leaving displaced families without adequate protection.
UNICEF warned that overcrowded living conditions and inadequate sanitation services could fuel a dangerous cycle of disease and deprivation. The drop in temperatures has further increased energy needs at a time when families lack sufficient food, heating, and other essential supplies.
According to the organization, the shortage of proper bedding, blankets, and dry shelter has heightened the risk of hypothermia and waterborne illnesses, particularly among children whose immune systems are already compromised.
UNICEF added that since the ceasefire announced in October 2025, it has delivered thousands of family tents, hundreds of thousands of blankets, and winter clothing kits to Gaza as part of ongoing efforts to reduce the impact of harsh winter conditions.
