DaysofPal- Palestinians have reacted with widespread anger and condemnation following the announcement that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has joined a U.S.-backed Peace Council for Gaza, established by President Donald Trump to oversee the territory’s postwar administration.
Critics warned the move represents an attempt to legitimize alleged war crimes and weaken international accountability mechanisms.
Palestinian activists, writers, and political analysts described the decision as a profound distortion of justice, arguing that Netanyahu, accused of overseeing a devastating military campaign in Gaza and sought by the International Criminal Court, is being recast as a partner in a body labeled as promoting peace, while victims remain denied accountability and legal remedy.
The backlash first gained momentum on social media, led by the account @Hanzpal2 (Hanzala), which labeled the move “the ultimate farce,” a phrase that quickly spread online and became emblematic of public rejection.
Television correspondent Islam Badr responded with sharp irony, saying that placing Netanyahu on a peace council after the widespread destruction of Gaza reflects a profound moral contradiction.
His comments drew significant engagement across social platforms.
Palestinian writer Ahmad Al-Hila said Netanyahu’s appointment symbolizes the erasure of victims and highlights the imbalance of power rooted in the U.S.-Israeli alliance, allowing figures accused of grave crimes to be repackaged under conciliatory political labels.
Political analyst Ibrahim Al-Madhoun warned that Netanyahu’s presence could undermine the council’s credibility from its inception and discourage international participation, not only due to Netanyahu himself, but because of Israeli role in a body purportedly dedicated to peace.
Dr. Abdullah Marouf, a professor of Jerusalem studies, described the move as a “political obscenity,” arguing that elevating a figure accused of genocide to a peace framework reflects a broader erosion of moral standards within the international system.
Writer and analyst Yaseen Ezzedine, cautioned that the most dangerous aspect of the initiative lies in its potential to impose a new political reality in Gaza, effectively entrenching Israeli influence as part of the U.S.-led effort to rehabilitate Netanyahu’s international image.
Others expressed their rejection through satire, saying the decision underscores the international community’s detachment from Palestinian suffering.
Activists in the occupied West Bank said the move further exposes the selective justice and double standards in the handling of alleged war crimes.
As reports emerged that Netanyahu would not attend the council’s inauguration in Switzerland due to an international arrest warrant, sarcastic reactions once again dominated online platforms, reinforcing that the backlash reflects a broad Palestinian rejection of any peace process perceived as built on impunity, the exclusion of victims, and the erosion of justice.
