DaysofPal- Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Palestine, stated that a new UN report has found the Israeli war on Gaza has wiped out 69 years of human development in the territory, devastating healthcare, education, infrastructure, and even the banking sector.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Albanese described the destruction as “the worst economic collapse ever recorded,” asserting, “This is not a war, this is genocide.”
She shared a summary of the report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which found that the devastation since October 2023 has unleashed cascading economic, humanitarian, environmental, and social crises, pushing the occupied Palestinian territories “from underdevelopment to outright destruction.”
According to the report, Gaza’s economy shrank by 87% during 2023 and 2024, with per capita GDP plunging to just $161, one of the lowest figures ever recorded globally. UNCTAD noted that the Israeli genocidal war has destroyed every pillar of survival, food, shelter, and health care, driving Gaza to “the brink of total collapse.”
The report classified Gaza’s economic disaster among the world’s ten worst crises since 1960 and warned that recovery could take decades, during which Gaza will remain heavily dependent on international aid.
UNCTAD estimated that reconstruction will require more than $70 billion.
Albanese concluded that the situation in Gaza is not simply a humanitarian emergency or a war, but an act of genocide that has reversed nearly seven decades of Palestinian progress.
