UN Rights Chief: Gaza Faces Most Severe Psychological Trauma Imaginable
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

DaysofPal- UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has described the collective psychological shock experienced by Gaza’s population as “the most severe mental health crisis imaginable,” warning that the overwhelming majority of residents, especially children, are suffering from acute trauma.

Speaking at a press conference marking International Human Rights Day, Turk said Gaza remains “a place of suffering, loss, and fear,” as relentless Israeli attacks continue to devastate the enclave.

The UN official renewed his condemnation of ongoing Israeli strikes, including the targeting of civilians approaching the so-called “yellow line,” as well as the bombing of residential buildings, displacement tents, shelters, and other civilian sites.

Türk emphasized that UN Security Council Resolution 2803 (2025) is absolutely clear in its position, rejecting any imposed borders or lines and affirming the need to respect the territory in its entirety.
The resolution, adopted on November 17, lays out an international plan aimed at ending the conflict and establishing a sustainable peace process.

He called on all parties to immediately commit to a ceasefire and ensure a smooth transition to the next stage of the peace plan.

Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation, backed by the United States and several European governments, has waged a genocidal war in Gaza, involving mass killing, starvation, destruction, displacement, and widespread arrests, despite global appeals and orders by the International Court of Justice to halt such actions.

The genocide has killed or injured more than 241,000 Palestinians, the majority of them women and children. More than 11,000 people remain missing, while hundreds of thousands have been displaced amid a famine that has claimed many lives, most of them children.
