DaysofPal—Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, stated on Wednesday that torture and rape against Palestinian detainees have become widespread and systematic in Israeli prisons since October 7, 2023.
In a tweet on her official X account, Albanese confirmed that Palestinian prisoners have been subjected to rape and sexual violence, noting that the documented gang rape at Sde Teiman detention center is not an isolated case—it’s part of a pattern.
She emphasized that these violations against Palestinian detainees amount to acts of genocide, adding that it is time to build a new global system following the collapse of the Western-led moral order.
Albanese also called on three European countries to clarify their decision to provide a “safe air corridor” for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes—during his visit to Washington, despite the ongoing crimes committed by his far-right government against Palestinians, which she said constitute war crimes.
On November 21, 2024, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Earlier this month, the European Commission stated that it supports the ICC and that all EU member states are obligated to execute arrest warrants issued against Netanyahu.
