DaysofPal- A United Nations inquiry has concluded that the nearly two-year Israeli military campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide, marking a landmark finding in the international body’s investigation into the war.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Navi Pillay, chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, in an interview with Al Jazeera.
“We’ve identified the president [Isaac Herzog], the prime minister [Benjamin Netanyahu], and the former minister of defence [Yoav Gallant] based on their statements and the orders that they’ve given,” Pillay said.
“Because these three individuals were agents of the state, under the law, the state is held responsible. So we say it’s the state of Israel that has committed genocide.” Pillay added.
According to the Commission’s report, the findings were based not only on official statements by Israeli leaders but also on “circumstantial evidence” that demonstrated genocidal intent.
“The Commission concludes that the Israeli authorities and Israeli security forces have the genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” the report stated.
It’s noteworthy that the death toll from the Israeli genocide committed by the Israeli occupation in Gaza since October 2023 has risen to 64,905 martyrs, in addition to 164,926 wounded, more than 9,000 missing, and a famine that has claimed hundreds of lives, while more than two million Palestinians live in conditions of forced displacement amid widespread destruction.
