The United Nations Human Rights Office has condemned an Israeli attack on a crucial drinking water reservoir in Rafah, located in the southern Gaza Strip. According to the UN, the assault constitutes a clear violation of international humanitarian law, which strictly prohibits targeting infrastructure essential for civilian survival, such as water supplies.
Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, emphasized the gravity of the situation in an interview with Anadolu news agency. “It is indeed strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law to attack civilian objects,” Laurence stated. “Moreover, it is prohibited to attack objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population, such as drinking water supplies.”
The Israeli occupation army admitted on Monday that its forces were responsible for the bombing of the Tal as-Sultan water reservoir. The attack has sparked significant concern and outrage, leading to an internal investigation by the Israeli occupation military, as reported by the Israeli daily Haaretz.
Despite this acknowledgment, Laurence expressed skepticism regarding the transparency and effectiveness of the Israeli investigation. “The Human Rights Office has received no information on any investigations by Israel into the specific incident of the destruction of the water reserve,” he said..
