DaysofPal- United Nations human rights experts have called on Israel to immediately release Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian doctor from Gaza, following alarming reports about his treatment in detention.
In a press statement, the experts said they had received credible information indicating that Dr. Abu Safiya has been subjected to severe torture and other forms of cruel and degrading treatment. They warned that his health condition has significantly deteriorated and described his situation as critical.
Dr. Abu Safiya, a pediatrician and former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been held by Israeli military forces since 27 December 2024. He is being detained under Israel’s “unlawful combatant” law, a measure the experts have repeatedly criticized for violating international human rights and humanitarian standards.
According to the statement, Dr. Abu Safiya has been denied essential medical examinations and treatment during his detention. The experts stressed that the lack of proper care has placed his life and well-being at serious risk.
They also highlighted that the conditions of his detention appear arbitrary and inconsistent with the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, known as the Mandela Rules. These rules require states to ensure detainees have access to adequate healthcare.
The experts emphasized that all countries have a legal obligation to protect healthcare workers and ensure the safety of individuals who are wounded or ill while in custody. They warned that ongoing violence against medical personnel and damage to healthcare facilities in Gaza continue to raise serious concerns.
Describing Dr. Abu Safiya as a respected medical professional, the experts stated that his detention represents a violation of fundamental human rights, including protection from torture and the right to health.
They called on the international community to take action, urging states with influence over Israel to use all available means to secure his release and ensure accountability.
The UN experts confirmed that they have raised the issue directly with the Israeli government and continue to monitor developments closely.
