DayofPal—British journalist and activist Tony Greenstein is set to stand trial at Kingston Crown Court on January 5, with a potential sentence of 14 years for expressing support for Palestinian resistance.
Charged under Section 12 of the UK Terrorism Act 2000, Greenstein was arrested by UK counter-terrorism police in a dawn raid in December 2023, following a social media post in which he expressed support for Palestinian resistance against Israeli forces.
Authorities seized his electronic devices during the arrest, citing their relevance to the investigation.
The journalist added that the charge criminalizes political expression rather than any act of violence, warning that anti-terrorism legislation is being used to suppress dissent and restrict reporting critical of Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
He also criticized the UK government’s bias as “racist hypocrisy” over proscribing Hamas as a terrorist organization while failing to do so with Israel’s military attacks, including crimes against Palestinian children.
Highlighting UK’s suppress of the legitimate political expression, he compared his case to past anti-colonial movements and WWII resistance.
He says the case has left him uncertain about what journalists are legally permitted to write or say on Palestine.
The prosecution comes amid wider concerns from press freedom advocates and legal experts over the use of terrorism laws to target journalists and activists.
Greenstein has thereby called for a protest outside Kingston Crown Court on the day of his trial, describing his case as part of a broader crackdown on free speech and political activism related to Palestine.
