DaysofPal- Today marks a historic moment for Palestinians as they anticipate a return to their homes in northern Gaza, a move that has been long awaited. For over 15 months, countless families have been displaced, living in harsh conditions in the southern part of Gaza.
However, with the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which entered into effect on January 19, there is now hope.
In a remarkable scene earlier today in Gaza City, Israeli captives appeared on a podium while Palestinians celebrated the second phase of the prisoner exchange.
The sight was historic not only because of the release of prisoners but also because Palestinian Islamic Jihad appeared alongside Hamas, symbolizing unity in this critical moment. The excitement is palpable, and thousands of Palestinians, particularly around Wadi Gaza, are now eagerly awaiting the moment they can move back to their northern homes.
This development follows a ceasefire agreement and prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas, which was initiated earlier this month. As per the terms of the deal, Hamas has agreed to release four Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. So far, Israel has freed 90 Palestinian detainees, while Hamas has released three Israeli captives. The prisoner exchange is part of a broader 42-day ceasefire arrangement aimed at de-escalating the ongoing violence in Gaza.
Despite the hopes of many Palestinians, there is an obstacle preventing the full return to northern Gaza. Israel has stated that it will not allow civilians to return until a particular issue is resolved, namely, the release of a female civilian Israeli captive, Arbel Yehoud, who was expected to be released today. According to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s office, the return of Palestinians will be contingent on the resolution of this matter.
For Palestinians, however, the anticipation remains high. They are exhausted from being displaced, and after over a year of living in difficult conditions, the prospect of returning home is nothing short of a dream.
The Government Media Office in Gaza has announced measures to facilitate the anticipated return of displaced Palestinians from the southern and central enclaves to Gaza City and northern areas, set to begin this Sunday.
