Philippe Lazzarini, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), made a desperate plea for a temporary ceasefire in northern Gaza, in order to facilitate the delivery of crucial humanitarian aid to civilians trapped in the conflict-ridden area.
Lazzarini expressed the dire situation through a post on X, stating that UNRWA staff were unable to locate basic necessities such as food, water, and medicine amidst the devastation. “The smell of death is everywhere,” he wrote, painting a grim picture of bodies lying unclaimed on roads and beneath rubble. Efforts to clear the deceased or provide much-needed aid have been obstructed.
Appealing for an “immediate truce, even if only for a few hours,” Lazzarini stressed the necessity of allowing safe passage for families seeking refuge. “This is the bare minimum to save the lives of civilians who have nothing to do with this conflict,” he urged, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian intervention.
